Hospice of the Central Peninsula*

PO Box 2584

35911 Kenai Spur Highway

Alaska Soldotna, 99669

(907) 262-0453

http://www.hospiceofcentralpeninsula.com

Hospice of the Central Peninsula offers a FREE grief camp for children/teens ages 6 to 16 in August of each year and prior to the start of Borough School District.

We utilize an existing camp for our site, we are on a large lake and can provide swimming, boating, and horseback riding as part of the camp. We have one paid staff (the Bereavement Coordinator), sometimes an intern through a grant, and all other staff are trained volunteers.

Our volunteers are called Buddies. We maintain a 1x2 ratio, 1 adult to two campers, age appropriate. Although the theme is the same for all campers it is presented in age appropriate activities. This ratio was decided by the Buddies as the one that provided the best support to the campers.

One of the greatest assets for this camp is breaking the isolation that many feel related to their grief, and providing a safe & supportive environment for them. We also hope to provide them with additional tools to allow them to express their grief in constructive ways and begin the first steps to building positive memories.

The staff is very committed, many even taking time off from work to volunteer. It is an intensive few days, many emotions, tears and laughter both, and at the end we say wow, as we separate with hugs and smiles.

We are able to keep this camp free due to the tremendous financial support of local businesses, organizations and individuals as well as out outstanding volunteers.
